Highlights to explore
Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest city and commercial port on the country’s Indian Ocean coast. A former fishing village‚ the city’s name is derived from the Arabic language meaning ‘Haven of Peace’.
National Museum offers Tanzanian history exhibits‚ including the fossils of human ancestors found by anthropologist Louis Leakey.
Craftsmen create and sell masks‚ bone carvings‚ shields‚ spears and fabrics‚ plus Tingatinga-style paintings that utilize saturated colors‚ at the Mwenge woodcarvers’ market. At the northern end of the harbor is the buzzing Kivukoni fish market and auction where dhows‚ or sailboats‚ drop their daily catch. Dhows also cruise to the nearby islands of Bongoyo and Mbudya‚ whose uninhabited beaches and clear waters are part of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve. The city’s Kigamboni district offers white-sand beaches on the mainland.
